Amelia Forman was only 3 when her mother, the photographer Robin Schwartz, took her along to a photo shoot with a chimp. Schwartz was astonished by what happened. ‘‘I went to photograph the chimp, and they kissed,’’ Schwartz said. ‘‘It was sort of odd.’’ That set off nearly a decade of mother-daughter trips to photograph Amelia with animals. Now 12, Amelia projects a near-mystical calm into the camera: gazing into the eyes of kangaroos, nuzzling a capuchin monkey, staying still while a cotton-top tamarin paws through her hair…. She insists she has never been frightened around an animal. ‘‘It’s like being with a very little kid, except better,’’ Amelia said. ‘‘You can really understand them. You can almost talk to them.’’
Gorgeous photo album on the NYT magazine site.
